Stress-Free Boarding: What Should a Pet Owner Pack in Their Dog’s Suitcase?

Leaving your pet with someone else while you travel is an emotional moment for both you and them. Even though our SCOOBER sitters offer a home filled with love and attention, changing environments is still a big deal for a dog.
The secret to a successful, stress-free stay lies in one simple thing: packing the right comfort items from home. Just as you wouldn’t leave on a trip without your passport and favorite personal items, your dog needs their own "travel suitcase" to help them feel safe and comfortable.
To make the process easier for you, we have prepared this detailed checklist of what to pack before dropping your dog off with their favorite sitter.
1. "The Scent of Home" (A blanket or an old t-shirt)
Dogs experience the world primarily through their nose. When they find themselves in a new environment, a familiar scent from their home and owner acts as an instant calming agent.
What to pack: Their favorite bed or the blanket they sleep on every day.
SCOOBER Tip: Pack an old, unwashed t-shirt of yours. Your scent on it will help your dog feel much more secure during the first few hours after parting.
2. Precise Portions of Food and Favorite Treats
Switching diets combined with a new environment can easily trigger tummy troubles for dogs. That is why consistency in their diet is crucial.
What to pack: Enough of the exact food they eat daily (kibble, cans, or pre-prepared raw/home-cooked meals).
SCOOBER Tip: It is best to separate dry food into individual bags for each meal. Don't forget to pack their favorite treats too — they are the perfect tool for the sitter to build a bond and use positive reinforcement from day one.
3. Walking Gear Your Dog Is Used To
Safety during walks around Skopje is our highest priority. Therefore, it is important for the dog to use the exact equipment they are already accustomed to and feel secure in.
What to pack: A harness or collar, a matching leash, and a dispenser with poop bags.
SCOOBER Tip: Check that all gear is functional and fits properly. If your dog has a habit of slipping out of their harness when startled, make sure to mention this to the sitter at drop-off.
4. A Favorite Toy (For entertainment and comfort)
Toys are not just for fun — they are an excellent tool for relieving stress and burning off nervous energy.
What to pack: One or two favorite toys. Rubber toys that can be stuffed with food (like a Kong) are lifesavers in these situations because they keep the dog engaged for a longer time.
SCOOBER Tip: Avoid packing toys that rip apart easily or that the dog could potentially swallow if the sitter turns their back for a moment.
5. Health Records and Regular Medication (If applicable)
We always want to be prepared for any scenario, making medical documentation a mandatory part of the suitcase.
What to pack: Their veterinary passport/records showing they are up to date on vaccinations and parasite prevention. If your dog takes regular medication or supplements, pack them with clear, written instructions on dosage.
Ready for a Worry-Free Stay?
Before you zip that suitcase closed, do one final double-check. When all these pieces are in place, every upcoming stay becomes much more relaxed — for both you and your dog.
